Parenting schedules

Understand common parenting schedules before you negotiate one.

A pattern name is hard to picture across a full year. Here is how the common schedules run, and what to gather about your children’s routine first.

What you gather here carries into your Alette Case File.

Why this preparation matters

A schedule that sounds simple on paper can look different across a full year.

In Alette, your parenting schedule lives on its own calendar, with exchanges and changed days marked. You can view it across two weeks, a month and a full year to see how weekends and exchanges fall.

Each pattern describes how time is divided. Which one fits a family often depends on the children’s ages, school, the distance between homes and work schedules.

  • Alternating weeks. One week with each parent, with one exchange a week.
  • 2-2-3. Two days with one parent, two with the other, then three with the first. The next week reverses, so weekends alternate.
  • 2-2-5-5. Two days with each parent, then five with each, repeating every two weeks. Each parent keeps the same weekdays every week.
  • 3-4-4-3. Three days with one parent and four with the other, reversed the following week.
  • Every other weekend. The children live mainly with one parent and spend alternating weekends with the other, often with a midweek visit.

Alette shows what a schedule looks like over time. It does not recommend one.
